There is, in fact, a method to the madness; the end product doesn't happen without the design process and the deadlines along the way.  Here's a look at how I work.

The Design Process

01

Programming

Programming is the beginning of every major project. In this phase, I sit down and establish the problem: what is needed? From space requirements, clients' needs and wants, codes, etc., research, case studies, adjacency matrices, and establishing a parti (or inspirtation) are all a part of the opening phase of programming.

02

Schematics

After gathering all research and programming, the actual design begins. In schematic design, hand sketching abounds, along with other helpful diagrams like space bubbling and blocking. This is the phase of "ideation," or sketching anything and everything that comes to mind that relates to the design at hand. Developing different ideas during this phase is key, in order to implement the strongest one, rather than simply the first one that comes to mind. Inspiration and material ideas are established (but not finalized).

03

Design Development

Following schematics, a more clear direction is taken and design development begins. Depending on the project media, this could mean beginning final hand drafts, plans, and renderings, or putting the final design into the computer in Revit to create drawings and photorealistic renderings. This phase also includes putting together finish and presentation boards.

04

Construction Documents

Several projects go through the construction document phase, especially if they are actually being built. Taking the formal drawings from design development, contract documents are created that could be given to a contractor to be built.
